I had been interested in reading The Liar’s Dictionary for quite some time, and now that I have read it, I have to say that I found it to be disappointing. It is not at all as interesting as the blurb on the back cover makes it out to be. As I was reading it, I kept waiting for more plot to occur, but it feels like not a lot happens in this novel.

A Little Life is one of the most devastatingly beautifully written novels I have ever read. I sobbed my way through about the last quarter of this novel, but I still think it is one of the best books I have had the fortune to read and I am so glad I decided to read it. I will warn you, though, that A Little Life is very frank, and somewhat detailed, in its depiction of emotional, physical and sexual child abuse, which can make it very difficult to read at times. But it is such an exquisite portrait of a friendship that span decades, that A Little Life deserves to be read and loved.

Plain Bad Heroines by emily m. danforth is a mishmash of different genres: we’ve got supernatural horror, historical fiction, queer romance and a modern riff on fame and the movie industry. Plain Bad Heroines is also meta-fiction as it is about a book that sets off a chain of events in the past that are written about in a book in the present that is being turned into a movie. I can see why people would be drawn to this novel, because it does sound interesting on the face of it, but I would have liked it better if I had not been so annoyed by the narrative voice employed by the author and if it did not have such an abrupt ending.

I will always be drawn to Maggie Stiefvater’s novels. Her stories are richly imaginative and set in the real world, with just enough of the supernatural to make them seem plausible. Mister Impossible is the second book of The Dreamer Trilogy; the first book is Call Down the Hawk. The Dreamer Trilogy is a spin-off of The Raven Cycle, a quartet of books that I do not even know how to summarize even though I have read them all twice. Essentially, The Raven Cycle is about a teenage girl and four private school boys who are in search of a Welsh king named Glendower who is supposedly sleeping underneath a forest called Cabeswater. There are psychics, ley lines, ghosts and other supernatural things in these books. Nothing I say will make these books make sense, all I know is that I enjoy reading The Raven Cycle; I enjoy the characters and their relationships with each other; I enjoy the lyricality of Stiefvater’s writing.

Ace of Spades is Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé’s debut novel. Her inspiration for the novel came from the TV show Gossip Girl (which I have never watched) and the Jordan Peele movie Get Out (which I have watched). The novel is about two Black teens, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, who are the only Black students at the private school that they attend, and who become the targets of anonymous text messages sent to the entire student body by someone called “Aces” who is exposing secrets about them that threatens to ruin their lives. If you have seen Get Out, you will have some idea of who “Aces” is and why they are targeting Devon and Chiamaka, but that does not make Ace of Spades any less thrilling to read.

Jonny Appleseed is the first novel by Two-Spirit/Indigenous Queer writer Joshua Whitehead. Whitehead’s protagonist, Jonny, is also Two-Spirit/Indigenous Queer, and the novel is about Jonny ruminating on his upbringing on “the rez”. Jonny Appleseed is an introspective novel; if you prefer novels that are plot-focused, then you will probably not like it. However, if you enjoy immersing yourself in other people’s lives and experiences, then I think you should definitely give Jonny Appleseed a read.

I know I was not very enthusiastic in my review of The Library of the Unwritten, but I think it would be worth reading just so you can get to The Archive of the Forgotten.

I have been hearing a lot about Taylor Jenkins Reid in the last couple of years. People really seem to like her novels, so I decided it was about time I read one. I was going to read Daisy Jones & the Six, but then I heard about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and the plot sounded more like it was up my alley. Based on this novel, I can understand why her novels are so popular. The story certainly has a tabloid quality that people like to devour, and she practically bludgeons the reader over the head with foreshadowing that will keep you reading instead of doing the prudent thing and going to bed at a decent hour. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is certainly an entertaining read, but am I blown away by it? No, not really. I was expecting it to be more original, more profound than it actually is.

I enjoyed reading The Library of the Unwritten, but do I think it is an amazing book that would I recommend over a lot of the other books I have read recently? No. The concept is interesting, but the characters are not original enough to make this novel really stand out. I am not saying that you would be wasting your time reading this novel, but I would not blame you if you had something else you are really excited to read instead.
